A Letter to Autumn

As you read this British Summer Time is over for another year and we are back to regular old Greenwich Mean Time. A day where we all collectively ask "do the clocks go forward or back" and we all rave about our extra hour of sleep.

So Autumn is officially here. The nights are slowly starting to draw in, the leaves changing colour and you can wear big jumpers and snuggle up in front of the TV. Time to stock up on warmer clothes and put the summer dresses away.

Since the beginning of October I've been watching the lovely Carrie Hope Fletcher write 'Letters to Autumn' on her Youtube Channel. Also I watched the wonderful Emily Diana Ruth (emilieofnewgloom) write 'Letters to July' this year and last year. Since today has marked the end of Daylight Savings Time, I thought I would write a Letter to Autumn myself.

__________

Dear Autumn,

You are well and truly in full motion. You bring warmish days and chilly nights. You bring sunshine but you also bring a lot of wind ... and rain. That's one thing that strikes me about you Autumn. You seem very undecided about your weather choices until your colder counterpart, Winter comes and makes up your mind for you. Even though you are as indecisive as a child in a toy shop, you seem to do it with a lot more style.

You may have style, Autumn, but one thing that strikes me about you most is how photogenic you are. When searching through social media, I can't move for photographs of rolling mist over lakes, the most beautiful of posing animals and leaves covering everything. You pull off Orange very well Autumn and you suit red and yellow wonderfully. You also fill Instagram tags full of photographs of boots buried in leaves, intricately decorated hot beverages and oh so many arty pumpkins.

One thing that does make me smile about you Autumn is how us puny humans have forced such strange traditions onto you. We see orange fruit growing out of the ground. Not only do we put it into our food and drink, we carve them into scary shapes and faces to scare spirits away. Explain that Autumn. Nothing says fighting off evil spirits like hollow food. We also see red fruit growing from the trees and decide to either cover them or toffee or put them in a bucket of water and retrieve them with our mouths. These would be completely unacceptable any other time of year, but you make them okay, Autumn.

These traditions tend to be paired with our Autumnal based Holidays. Halloween and Bonfire Night are firmly in your grasp Autumn. Two holidays where a lot of their activities are based outside such as Trick or Treating, Bonfires and Fireworks displays. They occur in the rainiest of your days, Autumn. We don't let that dampen our spirits though. No rain will stop us enjoying you, Autumn. Well with in reason. I am British after all. I can handle my rain, but no more hurricanes please.

Autumn, even though you bring a variety of colour and celebration to your days, you sometimes have a rather melancholic feel to yourself. As the changing leaves loose their last grasp of life and fall to the ground, the whole world around you feels like it's starting to change. Life can feel like this in general but when nature starts do its adjustments, everything can feel it's becoming different and almost foreign.

But we all have to remember, Autumn, that even though it may look like our surroundings have departed from us, they are just sleeping and everything will start to grow fresh again when your good friend Springs comes around. You're very clever aren't you, Autumn! Some parts of nature can shed itself back to basics to reserve energy and then come back stronger in the Spring. A technique us humans could use!

You truly are a portrayer of many emotions. But it's not always sad. You make us feel at ease with your presence. You are the comforter between Summer and Winter that guides us steadily in between the two. Without you Autumn we'd forget that every year the seasons have to change and even though we enjoyed the warmth of Summer, we need to travel forwards in time to Winter. You're a teacher. You must get annoyed with us as students because you have to remind us every year!

I associate you with learning, Autumn. Back in my days of education, a new year of learning would start in Autumn. I've spent many a time sitting in classrooms and looking outside at changing sceneries and watching leaves fall. Even up into my university days. Even though I'm not in education anymore I know you're still out there in other students lives. When I drive past a school these days I think, "Haha, you're in school! Been there, done that!" Also shopping malls and public places aren't full of children as they were in Summer because they have been guided back to the place of learning. Thank you for that Autumn!

It's time I sign off Autumn. This may be farewell for the time being but the next time I venture outside I will greet you with open arms. Hope we have some wonderful times together until we end up parting ways and Winter takes over. But that's a little while off yet so lets have some fun first! I'll plan our schedule and you do what you do best and just be you.
Until next time, Autumn!
